AVOIDING A SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY.

A boy named Eric has a behavioral problems, so his mother brings him to the doctor. The doctor gives him a tranquilizer to see if it can help him. The docotr uses a single-blind experiment, where the participant is "blind" in the fact that he dosen't know hes gotten the tranquilizer but thinks hes getting a vitamin. A few weeks after the boy comes back to the docotrs and is told that he got the tranquilizer and it had

The case of the Lorna Davis Remedy

Placebo Effect Period of study: 1998

Intro: Lorna Davis without a complete cure for cancer believed in herbal remedies rather than prescribed medicine by doctors. She was convinced that it was the doctor’s fault for her diagnosis of breast cancer.

Hypothesis: Dr. Rode Brown the same doctor that diagnosed her recognized her obsession over herbal remedies and wanted to prove to Davis that they do not actually work.

Method: in an attempt to prove her wrong he bought peppermint leaves and told Lorna to boil and drink the water of the leaves for six weeks. With so much belief in the remedy she remained loyal and after six weeks she returned to the doctor and told him she no longer had cancer.

Results: After running several test including a test for cancer and one for the effects of the remedy he determined she no longer had cancer but also that the remedy did not do anything but cleanse her blood stream. He concluded that it was not her obsession with the remedies but the belief that they could cure anything cured resulted in her curing herself.

Placebo Effect

John is in a trial experiment for a new drug that treats Multiple Sclerosis. His doctor told him that the study is a blinded experiment, and that he has a 50-50 chance of getting the "real" drug or a "fake" treatment which is being tested to see the difference between the two.

John's Multiple Sclerosis slows down for a short period of time after taking the drug, and was surprised when he found out he was in the placebo group.

A self-fulfilling prophecy could be decribed as an effect mentally that can effect your behavior or you physically. For example, my mom had told me when I was younger that I was going to get the flu bug once evry year around Chritmas because I had for the last few years. Eventually, I began to believe it, and every year after that obtained the flu bug. After a while, I began to tell myself I wasn't going to get sick, I was going to prvent it. I began to feel better and only got the flu bug every once in a while, when I didn't expect it.

The doctor examines her and can not find the reason for her stomach pains, so he decides to use the single blind experiement. So he gave gave her a pill that he told her was naproxin that will ease her pains. 30 minutes he checked up on her and she told him the pill made her feel alot better. But what the doctor really gave her was a calcium pill that really could not cure a stomach pains.

The Placebo Effect

A woman sees a pediatrician because her son is having chronic headaches. He tells her she has two options for the treatment of her son. Her choices include an over the counter drug to buy in the pharmacy or a special perscription drug he gives when head aches are unbearable and that it was sure to work. The mother feels her child is in need of something to cure him fast so she chooses the perscription drug. He tells her when to give him the medication and when to come see him again for another check up. Three days later the mother comes back into the pediatrician's office and says that the drug worked the very first day and her son was fine. The doctor informed her that the perscription drug was simply a sugar pill and had nothing to do with the boys immediate recovery.

kids in a school are diagnosed as depressed. they are told if you take this pill you will feel better and be more enerjetic. the pills are just vitamins but the kids are unaware, therefore they begin to try things they wouldn't normally do. then they realize they can, but they think it is a result of the pill

While entering Wal-mart, My little neice fell playing around in front of a crowd of people. She had a bruise on her elbow. My sister(her mother) says she will kiss it and the pain will go away magically. Based on the magical part, my niece made up her mind that the pain was gone.
